USDA Farm Bill Program
Palm Beach Soil and Water Conservation District joined efforts with USDA/Natural Resources Conservation Service to introduce and implement wise use of land, water conservation, water quality and related conservation resources through the implementation of the USDA Farm Bill programs, which are administered by NRCS. The District assists NRCS in promoting Farm Bill cost-share programs to local growers which can reduce their costs of implementing a variety of conservation practices as well as promote agricultural production.
For more information on the USDA Farm Bill cost-share programs, please visit http://www.nrcs.usda.gov or contact the District office at 561.792.2727 (x3).
Agriculture Mobile Irrigation Lab
As part of the ongoing effort to improve water quality standards and ensure water conservation in the Everglades Protection Area, Palm Beach Soil and Water Conservation District, Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and the South Florida Water Management District came together to provide nursery growers a FREE evaluation of their irrigation system.
For more information and to schedule an evaluation, Nursery growers can contact David DeMaio at 561-792-2727 x108.
Palm Beach County Ag Reserve
Palm Beach Soil and Water Conservation District works with Palm Beach County in the Ag Reserve on lands purchased by the County with funds from the March 1999 Conservation Lands Bond. Land in the Ag Reserve is leased to growers for agricultural production and the District works with the lessees to customize a three-year Best Management Practices (BMP) plan based on the crops grown. Through our
partnership with USDA/NRCS, the District also provides the lessees with maps indicating locations of all field and water control structures as well as soil maps and interpretation. he plan provides ongoing assurance that acceptable agricultural practices are conducted in the form of verified implementation of Best Management Practices.
Conservation Education
A vast majority of the county's population is made up of relocated residents unfamiliar with the South Florida environment, making education a vital necessity. The District encourages and promotes conservation education throughout Palm Beach County:
Local, State and National Conservation Poster Contest
Students in grades K – 5th are invited to participate in the local poster contest. The conservation-based theme encourages students to share their thoughts on soil, water and related natural resource issues. First place posters advance to the Area-wide and State-wide competitions with the State-wide winning poster going on to the National competition. Local winning posters are displayed in our booth at the South Florida Fair.
Palm Beach County Envirothon
The Envirothon is a competitive, problem-solving, natural resource event for local high school students. It is coordinated by the District annually. For more information, check out our Envirothon page.
In accordance with Federal law, and U.S. Department of Agriculture policy, the District is prohibited from discriminating on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age, or disability.
